El Cheapo refers to the cheesiness of this FAQ not the Varitone, but when
you look at the parts you'll see it's not exactly a mega bucks project.
Enjoy. Original diagram from Brosnac's Guitar Electronics for Musicians.
The 99-Cent Varitone FAQ
========================
Hereıs a 1961 Gibson Varitone control just for you.
(view with Courier font)
A six position switch is wired in so one position bypasses everything.
Or, use a bypass toggle and a 5 position rotary.
Volume and Tone controls are _before_ the pickup select switch so you can
pretty much attach this to anything. Gibson volume pots are typically
500K.
I hope the diagram is clear. Itıs not very easy to represent a rotary
switch in ASCII-art. The slanted line is the switch wiper.

Each resistor marked by two vertical ³*² is 10 Meg.
A capacitor is connected to each point marked a/b/c/d/e. They are:
a = .001 mfd
b = .003
c = .01
d = .03
e = .22
The other end of each capacitor is connected to a common point.
>--a--||--------+
>--b-----||-----+
>--c--------||--+----{this is a choke}---> to output jack ground
>--d-----||-----+
>--e--||--------+
The common point is wired through a 1.5 Henry choke (coil) to output jack
ground.
Donıt ask me where to find a 1.5 Henry choke.
³0² = Bypass position if 6 way switch is used.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 = the 5 varied tones. The capacitors that vary by a factor
of 10 shift the filter resonance by an octave, in other words, .001 and
.01 are centered an octave apart.
