This sounds a lot like the Gibson Varitone switch on 355's and other guitars.
If the circuit is similar, there's a 100K resistor which is switched in
series for positions 2-6. It may be that you could substitute a smaller
resistance value here and reduce the attenuation. The Gibson circuit also
attenuates the signal even in the frequency ranges it's designed to highlight.
