About three months ago, I replaced the original mini-humbuckers in my
'71 Les Paul Deluxe with Seymour Duncan mini-humbuckers. They are
a direct replacement for the originals. It's a pretty simple project
if you're handy with a soldering iron.
I was very reluctant to replace the pickups, feeling that I didn't want
to modify my guitar. Installing full size humbuckers was not an option
as far as I was concerned. On the other hand, I wanted a fatter, beefier
tone than I was able to get out of the stock pickups.
The result? I wish I had done it a long time ago. The range of tones
available now is incredible. The volume and tone controls actually
work as you would expect. I am very happy with these pickups.
Duncan makes three types of mini-humbuckers. I haven't got the
information here, so I can't tell you about the differences. I selected
the "Seymourized mini-humbucker". The models are SM-3N (neck) and SM-3B
(bridge).
Hope this helps. I know when I was considering "the change", I could have
used some input.
