I recently bought a new Ampeg JetII Model J-12R. It has one 12 inch speaker
and is 15 watts. It is my lightest amp at 30 pounds. It is covered in cool
blue diamond patterned vinyl and has a metal Ampeg nameplate/logo that looks
like it could have come off a 50's/60's car. Also leather handle.
This reissue of an older Ampeg runs on two EL84's and is a class A amp.
This little guy screams. It rolls off into a beautiful distortion at low
levels. At a recent gig I played it with a drummer and *loud* bass player. It
was quite up to the sound levels. The reverb sounds different than the
Fenders I'm used to but still great. It seems to have a little more treble
and less bass than the Fender amps. Gets a great tone for Alternative or
Rock-a-Billy.
It sounds different than any Fender or Marshall I've heard. I used a
distortion stomp box on only one song. The Ampeg just has a great natural
distortion. By turning down the guitar volume and tone I got a good Jazz tone
as well.
I can't say anything about the reliability of this amp as I have had it for
only a short time. (Class A amps are supposed to go through tubes faster than
the more typical A/B class amps.) I can say it is very well made. Looks *very
* cool and fills my needs nicely.
