I'm also curious as to a good sealant for a wood comb. Rupert mentioned a non-toxic varathane. I would also be interested in a brand name to look for.
My aunt recently gave me an old Hohner Chromonica II Deluxe (12-hole chromatic--really cool looking), and it has not seen a lot of use, but needs some work.
I want to replace the nails with screws and seal the comb,as it does not sound like it is air-tight enough.
I was going to try some Bees Wax (I just bought a one pound block at Jo Ann Fabrics, in the candle-making section), but I think I would prefer a polyurethane or similar for a better long-lasting job.
I may have a tough time with the screws. I got some 080 11/16 screws and nuts from F&R Farrell, but they are a wee short. This chromatic has thick aluminum reed plates (from what I can tell). I will either have to try just threading the reed plates, or try counter-sinking the holes a bit to make the screws and nuts work. Can't seem to find any screws that would be about 13/16 inch long--those would be ideal.
Well these little problems are what makes projected more interesting.
Anyone else in HarpLand work on an old chromatic like this ?
