I find this very surprising. Gift or no gift, it deprives the copyright owner of income. What if the recipient of the "gift" then sells it? Sounds like a gigantic loophole for bootlegging.
Making copies for personal use by an owner of a purchased copy is understood to be OK, as the copy is already purchased and is within property rights.
Can you quote chapter and verse on this law?
