Subject: A note about Joe Filisko

Hi All,

I hear a lot of talk about Joe's incredible work as a harmonica
technician. However, if you ask Joe to play something for you, you
enter a whole different world of harmonica virtuosity (should I have
said that word out loud?). He probably won't blow an overblow for you
unless you ask.

Joe is a master of the harmonica styles and techniques of the early
20th century. He is a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge about
harmonica recordings and can reproduce whole recordings or specific
effects at will. His work ass a player has been ground-breaking in
the preservation of our harmonica history. This was probably no small
part in SPAH's choice of Joe Filisko as most recent harmonica Player
of the Year.

There is a whole other side to Joe. One that introduced me to some of
the most fascinating harmonica styles and techniques I have ever
heard. Joe plays us a sample of one player, Gwen Foster from "way
back when" using techniques that were among the "newest" and exciting
things I had hear in quite a while. And this is an exciting time
right now for harmonica anyway! Joe doesn't just make harps. He
makes the harmonica sing through the years by adding his historical
knowledge through demonstration to the whole harmonica world!

Michael
