Subject: Re: beeswax (and other custom sealants..)

I've sealed wooden combs with beeswax (and just about everythng else! ) . If
you do the wax correctly It doesn't gum up reeds or anything, but I just
don't like it as much as a "harder" sealant. My all-time favorite is this
non-toxic varathane. It doesn't have any taste or odor when dry (hardly when
wet) and it penetrates the surfacer layers of the wood better than beeswax
and makes a real nice hard finish that glides smoothly against your
lips....I mean, it probably doesn't do as good a job as whatever Rob was
using in that tub...but...

Actually, a thought on that tub story, which I think emerged from the custom
harp thread...I used to soak my harps back in the early days, and I thought
the sound/playability was improved due to the moisture swelling the comb
etc. But then I noticed when cleaning the brand, new-fangled plastic body
harps (that had just become available...) there was the same type of
improvement (when they were wet...). I began to wonder if this wasn't due to
something happening in the relationship between the reeds and slots, rather
than the comb. I now think that's the case (especially with that Norwegian
massage oil that Rob used..), and I think that tightening the tolerance of
those slots and reeds is one of the big hidden things that (some )
customizers do that changes the harp a lot.
