Tom-
When I'm at an open mike, I watch the singer, and if I'm playing single notes, I never play while he is singing. I'll work around his vocals and avoid stepping om them. Sometimes I'll play chords in the low reeads during vocal, but that works better than single notes, I find. I never lay out entirely, though. Listen to Butterfield-I think he a had a good sense of back-up.
