Subject: Alanis Morrisette and pop music

Criticizing Morrisette's harmonica playing is ridiculous. She doesn't even
play the thing. Of the dozens of songs I've heard her do on radio I con
only recall one that has a harp and it's used very briefly as a kind of
sonic mood filling device. It's not musical but music is not the only
purpose to which a musical instruments can contribute to a performance.

I really like her music and songwriting. She's found a minor role for harp
in some of her stuff and it's cool but really has little to do with what she
does.

Mick Jagger can't dance but his jumping around still serves a purpose. Do
dancer complain about Jagger's abuse of their art form?

On a related note: Pop culture doesn't suck. I have two young daughters
and am forced to listen to pop radio often. I would never listen to it
otherwise but I definitely like the stuff. I am really amazed at the
quality of work that makes it to the top 40. Just cause there is more
entertaining stuff that doesn't get air play doesn't mean the stuff that
does is bad.

Things are moving along. The Oh Brother soundtrack winning a Grammy is
amazing. I never saw that coming. It's such an excellent album but is
never heard on the radio.
