Gabe described a good way to find the song key in a song with harmonica.
The same technique works for songs without harmonica. Play along with the
song. When the guitar or singer hits a note hard, try to find it on the
harp. You'll know if you hit it. If it's a guitar based tune-try A, E,
and G. If it's got a horn section try F and some of the flat keys. Piano
blues is frequently in G and C.

Practice helps. Play along with the radio. For playing live I like a set
list with the keys written out. I get too nervous otherwise.
