I subscribed to BR to check out Dave Barrett's column (which it turns out is too advanced for me - but I'll catch up some day). This month's (Feb/Mar) issue has lots of good stuff, including articles by or about guys I've seen live: Portnoy, Robillard, Margolin; plus other good reviews and assorted stuff.
Portnoy talks about the current status of clubs and festivals and his take is very much the same as reflected here. No money in clubs, so he's looking to play blues festivals and fill in with clubs, as necessary. I saw him with the Muddy Waters Tribute Band and am looking forward to seeing him soon with his own band (I believe he's coming to the Turning Point in NJ).
He also laments that the swing band era was maybe the last time good music was popular and popular music was good - I think there's a good bit of truth there.
