wow. i found that pretty impressive, though i admit i've never really
tried playing past 3rd pos. i listened to the tracks starting with C
and worked my way around the circle of 5ths (so i could keep track of
the "positions") and i was impressed with how very similar they all
were, certainly instantly recognizable as the same tune. F was the only
key that stood out to me as being "rough."
that said, i think the real challenge isn't to make each position sound
the same, since that's impossible, but to exploit the strengths of each
position. i'd much rather hear slightly different versions of the tune
in each key, exploring what kinds of unique techniques can be used in
each position: octaves in one position, chords in another, double stops
somewhere else, warbles, soaring bends, piercing overblows, playing the
tune as minor-key instead of major, etc. when i hear a kickin' version
of Scrapple from the Apple in all 12 keys, THAT will be a musical feat.
