Funny line - but amps have indeed been "improved" over the years with
more preamp stages for exactly this purpose, of providing more drive
to the finals from wimpy single coil guiitar pickups. Soldano SLO's,
various Mesa Boogies, etc., all make liberal use of preamp tubes.

In stark contrast, the old Champs have just a single 12AX7.

BTW on the inverter, it's a unity gain stage, regardless of the tube
used. Still, swapping tubes will rebias the stage, putting the
operating point on a different part of the curve, which will change
the sound. And because it's nonlinear, the noninverted side will
work considerably harder, so you might want to "rotate" your PA tubes
every couple months, to even out wear & tear.
