Interesting post, and if you're happy with 12AX7 tubes in most amps, great.
I'm not sure, though, that we mortal "bar band" players can completely base
how we set up our gear on what famous players do. (Not that you're
suggesting this.) Afterall, most famous cats have a crew of sound guys to
make sure everything's perfect. And if they're the leader of the band,
naturally, everyone behind them is hired to play a supporting role. John
Popper, as a member of bigtime touring rock act, probably has half a dozen
pro roadies hired to get the sound system just right. And, when I saw Sugar
Blue at a festival two years ago, he played a Shure 520dx into his famed
Mesa amp. He battled the feedback monster to the point of distraction (that
and his crappy, Budweiser-fueled demeanor almost had me walking away before
his show ended).
Bottom line is that there's no gospel truth on tube subs. If they work for
ya and help you tame the feedback beast or maybe even re-voice the amp a
bit, great. If you get the best results from the stock setup, that's great
too.
