I usually set my prescence on 4. I have set it in some instances higher. I would say to use your ear. The higher you go in my experience, the harsher the sound.
As far as preamp tubes, selecting the lower gain tubes lets you get breakup at lower volumes. The lowest of the low is 12AU7 which if you put it in slot one (or actually more than one slot) you will get breakup at successively lower volumes. Also, as far as the mid control for the Bassman goes, I have found this to have the biggest impact on volume, feedback, etc. Judicious use of this control can pretty heavily impact your tone
