<< Having said that - after reading an earlier post on the subject of
flutters
on the blow, I started messing around in the back of my throat, and to my
surprise found I was able to produce a rolled-r effect with a kind of
gargling exhalation, directing the air upward with the back of the tongue -
don't know if it's the real thing or not. However, when I put this through
the harp, it didn't sound like much of a flutter - the tone was altered
rather unpleasantly, to my ear, and the whole business seemed to be far too
awkward to be comducive to fast playing. Anyone have any tips? Are there
any recordings of players who use flutter techniques much? >>

someone suggested trying to make the growling sound that roy orbison makes
in
"pretty woman." i tried this and it works well...i just need to do it
better.
the only person i know that uses it much is peter madcat ruth. he uses it
as
part of his rhythm playing, and the best place to hear it is his album
harmonicology (which is really fantastic anyway). he demonstrates how he
does it on his instructional video, "the ins and outs of rhythm."
amazingly, as i type this, i'm playing a doo wop song called "marie" by the
four tunes, that features a good deal of rolling "r"s. if i could do that
thing billy stewart does on "summertime," i would be happier, but only a
little...
