Subject: Harp C.D.'s - Hey! Wait for me!

I can't stand it! All of this talk about harp C.D.'s and noone's
selling mine! IMHO: You all suck and I'm the greatest! Unless the other
theory is correct, then all of my C.D.'s suck!
The funny thing is, out of all of the buzzes generated on harp-l about
different players C.D.'s, I know half the guys mentioned, and they told me
they've sold about 2 - 5 discs as a result of this list. What's my point?
People want to talk about this stuff more than they want to spend for it.
Now if This buzz generated 20 or 30 sales for Bill Barrett, I'd be buying
infomercial space on this list!
"Multi talented (yet single handled) dude is loved by all, THE MOST
AMAZING HARMONICA PLAYER EVER! Yes, that's me. Now buy my C.D. and talk
about me. BTW, is it supposed to be better when other people talk about
one's playing?
On a serious note, I noticed something interesting about the harp C.D. -
Jazz record comparison. Almost every non-blues harp player that I admire
plays different instruments and mixes up the repertoire as to not bombard
the listener with harmonica. I notice myself I get very uncomfortable
playing just harmonica all night long, it bothers me. I believe Turk and
Galison are of the few that only play harmonica. I DO have a hard time
listening to a whole album of harmonica. Then again, I was once quoted as
saying "I don't really like the harmonica, it's just something I do well"..
I was only half serious. But the point is an interesting one. There's a lot
of guys out there doing these "harmonica C.D.'s" and they seem to be
recording for a very small audience, or themselves. That's fine. I as a
musician need a little bit more than a nuanced mixolydian scale blasted
through a vintage amp or recycled ideas cleverly weaved through vintage
changes.
My latest faves:

On blues, I think James Harmon has on of the more original approaches of
the traditional blues guys. Not necessarily on harp, but his songwriting,
singing and recording style just seem to have a twist few others can muster.
You go boy! And then there's that Peloquin guy.. (Now BUY HIS DAMN C.D.!)
For Jazz/other categories, I still can't get over Howard Levy and how he
has completely transcended his instrument and made it just another tool to
express his musical mind. Isn't that what we're all striving to do? I want a
killer tone just like every one else, but what difference does it make if I
have no rythym, harmonic knowledge or one single original idea? So BUY HIS
DAMN C.D.'s!!!!
Just for the record, I don't think I've purchased a single recording that
generated any gossip on this list, so I guess I'm just as cheap as the
rest... HA!
