There's a learning curve (like there is for any new piece of equipment), and the POD definitely sounds a lot better thru a clean PA type amp than most guitar amps. But once you get used to it, the POD sounds and performns surprisingly like the amps it emulates, at least the ones I've tried. Perhaps the hardest thing to get used to is that it can sound "like" at ANY volume. By definition (well, actually, by the Fletcher-Munsen curve, to be technically correct), this will sound different, because our hear "hears" differently at different volumes. But set the POD/PA to put out the same actual dB level as (on the same stage) and put the speaker where you'd normally have and you'd be surprised at just how well it nails the sound.
Is it *exactly* like YOUR ? Well, even different amps within the same make/model differ. But in my experience, it's surprisingly close.
If it sounds harsh or shrill, turn the treble on the PA down a little. (Guitar amps don't have tweeters :-)
