Hello list

Actually, Mike, G. is correct. I am an accountant by day, musician by
night, and do taxes all the time, many are for my musician friends. As a
full-time musician, you are self-employed and can and should designate a
portion of your home as your office and take a home office deduction. You
are providing a service and driving is a necessary expense related to
providing that service. You should keep a log of mileage incurred going to
and from gigs, the music store, etc. I know it's a pain in the ass, but it
can add up to a lot of money in your pocket in the long run. If you haven't
been doing this, you can file amended returns (1040x) and the IRS will
refund you the difference at least for the mileage, I am not sure if you can
go back and claim the home office deduction on an amendment. If you want, I
can check into it further. If someone other than you prepared your taxes, I
would have a talk with them about it.
