I won't comment on which type of harp is better, but if you haven't tried
playing a chromatic harp, you're missing out on a lot of fun. It does not
sound like a diatonic, but it has its own cool sound.

Harlem Nocturne-Charlie Musselwhite does a great version of this on Rough
News. I assume he uses a chromatic. Whatever he uses, it sounds great.

Old Rugged Cross is an excellent harp tune-Check out Mel Lyman's harp
playing with the Kweskin Jug Band on Kweskin's America album. Oh man, oh man.

Positions are peculiar to harp because even if you know music theory,
it's sometimes hard to figure out what notes you're playing-can't see the
little holes, my mouth is over them. Half the notes are bent into some
other note, depending on how hard you bend, etc., etc. So, if I'm mostly
inhaling, I'm in second position. If I'm playing on a certain area on the
harp, I'm in third position. Maybe it's a crutch, maybe it's just one
less thing to have to think about when I'm playing. By the way, I only
play in 3rd position on the chromatic, for other tunes, I use the organ.
I'm a sucker for psychedelic minor key organ.

<< One might argue that the flute is the right instrument for "Moondance",
IF you are attempting to copy or closely cover it. On the other hand, I
would argue that using a Chromatic offers the opportunity to do the song in
a different way, with a differnet tone, if you will. Using a different
instrument than the "popular choice of the masses" offers creative
possibilities. >>

"moondance" also sits well in third position on diatonic. a band i was in
was doing it when i got there...guitars, bass, and drums. i always liked
playing it, but then the woman who sang it got the boot. too bad. every now
and then it pops up at a jam, and it's always cool...
