Subject: Re: Larry Adler

I am very saddened by the news of Larry Adler's death. He really kicked the
chromatic harmonica ("mouth organ" as he called it), up a notch in the
symphonic concert world. He paved the way for many of us.

I met him when he was doing the Village Vanguard. He was extremely gracious
to me and introduced me to Frannkie Gershwin, George and Ira's baby sister.
I was thrilled.

He appeared in a crushed velvet, deep red, smoking jacket, looking very thin
and delicate, and actually took a nap, in the short time between sets. I
stayed for both sets savoring every moment. At the end of the show he
challenged the audience to come up with a Gershwin song that he didn't know.
That was of course impossible, even for Frannkie who yelled out the name of
a
tune she was sure would be too obscure even for Larry, who sitting at the
piano started playing it and singing the lyrics without hesitation.

He was over 80 and still gave an amazing show. I'll never forget it.

My best wishes to all,
Susan Rosenberg
