Subject: re: Suzuki ProMaster Evaluation

The Promaster is a great out-of-the box harp. (As it should be if price vs.
quality is considered)
I felt that valves on a diatonic were more trouble than they were worth.
But, that is definitely a matter of style/technique.

Brendan Power "sings the praises" of valved diatonics, and I'll take him at
his word. I'm no Brendan Power.
If I had the time/patience to develop the technique required to exploit the
virtues of valved diatonic, I would probably have a different opinion.

If what you are really looking for is an "upgrade" from the ~$25 diatonic
class, I would suggest:
Buy you next Suzuki with valves. Give them a fair shake. If you don't like
them, peel them off.
Then save a few bucks on the rest of your Suzukis, and buy the non-valved
ones.

I have had no durability problems with the Suzukis, but I also have Lee
Oskars and Special 20's that are close to twenty years old. So, I don't
stress the reeds as much as some folks. (Although I have three Hering Blues
that threw a reed with just an hour or so of playing time each. Bummer. A
harp that I want to love, but I can't get one to hold up...)
