I think it highlights both arguments equally. If we agree that all notes
cannot be played with equal beauty, then some melodies are going to sound
awkward. In many situations, playing in a different position will solve the
problem, but using alternate tunings is also a valid solution.

In fact I find interesting the fact that practically all the guys I know who
play Celtic music do to some extent use alternate tunings...
