It's pretty simple to build an electronic metronome if you're into
that and want to save a few bucks. A simple 555 chip (and
possibly a cheap GP transistor to drive the "speaker" - I'd use a
piezo transducer) and a few other components will do the trick.
If you want/need BPM, you'll need to calibrate it against another
metronome, drum machine, or your watch. They're calibrated in
"beats per minute").

Even cheaper is an online metronome.

It's written in javascript, and plays from their site. I tried it, and
it didn't work that well on my old Pentium 166. It might work
better on yours.

I found a bunch on http://www.download.com/. A few are freeware.
Here's one that's free and small. If it's wordwrapped, turn off
wordwrap in your mail reader. You should be able to click on the
link. If not, go to download.com and do a search for METRONOME.

My favorite "metronome" is a drum machine. they're deadly
accurate, and a LOT more flexible than a "tick-tock-tick-tock"
metronome.

Either way, it will improve your timing.
