Subject: Re: Unacceptable characterization of French people

Well...

I have to admit that I took the message in question to be "tongue in
cheek", too, and typical of Sam's sense of humor, which I have regularly
enjoyed on this list. I've read enough of Sam's posts to recognize when
he is using satire or being ludicrous to humorously illustrate a point.

Having said that, though, I think we should all realize that sometimes
extreme care needs to be taken when writing satirical or even sarcastic
witticisms. Not everyone will realize when someone else is just kidding
around. Very often what translates well in spoken language (or in our
heads) does not do so well in written language. In the years I've been
on the list I have seen many instances in which someone's innocent or
well-intended comments were misunderstood resulting in finger shaking and
bad feelings all around. In a medium like this everyone should be
careful not only what they write, but HOW they write it, and everyone
should also be careful to thoroughly read messages, keep them in
perspective, and try not to take anything out of context.
