Subject: Re: Scales

I teach that instead of calling them "scales" (which locks in a mindset -
separating scales completely from music), they are actually a "sequence of
notes outlining a tonality".

They are nothing more than musical choices within that tonality defined by
the notes.

I also teach not to play them up 8 notes, stop, and then down. I run them up
to the 9th degree and back -- example - (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do,
Re, Do, Ti, La, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, Do). Arc the line, play it musically.

This applies to Major, Minor, blues, pentatonic, whatever.

The reason you learn them is so you will be familiar with all the choices you
have in regards to creating or recreating music.
