I had on of those "duh" moments a few weeks ago. I wasn't satisfied with running the mic into a Danelectro Delay then into "Normal 1." I hated the fact that there was a loss of sound when you turned the unit off and played clean. So, the ol' patch cord idea came to mind and I started to experiment. I realized that I was basically creating an effects loop for an amp that doesn't have one.
I am now running the mic into bright 1. A patch cord out of bright 2 into the Danelectro Delay (with just a bit of slapback echo) and another patch cord out of the Delay and into normal 1. This set-up made a world of difference to me. It allows me to use the Normal Volume as a mixer to add more delay, there is no loss of signal to the amp from the mic so there is no drop in sound quality or volume when you turn the delay on and off. This effectively has given me a "clean channel" and a "dirty channel." Also, the unit is less prone to feedback and gives a wider range of cupping responses. I'm very satisfied with this set-up--at least 'til something better comes along.
