Subject: Re: Air-tightness of Hering Blues and Black Blues

Dear Harp-L,
In reference to recent comments about Hering Blues being perfectly airtight
and perfect right out of the box, this has not been my experience. I own a
G,A,B-flat,C,D-flat, and D and every one of them required either gapping
and/or micro pore gasketing before they became great harps. And they are
great harps, heavy with brass chrome plate covers and great tone. But I find
my other two favorite diatonics: Special 20's (not always perfect either, but
I like the way they fit my hand) also benefit from gapping and gasketing and
Lee Oskars (undoubtably the best out of the box with no work needed, except I
file off sharp edges and put micro pore tape on the inside of the coverplate
- -- a trick I learned from Tim Moyer--thanks Tim). IMHO the Herings may not be
so tight in the part of the comb that seperates the individual reeds, although
the reedplates are certainly stuck in there tight. My Herings seem to have
improved the more I've played them. My guess is that they "self sealed" from
saliva and random dust the more they were used. But at a little over $15 a
harp you can't beat them.
Sincerely,
Frank Zane
