Mark,
I prefer the Golden Melody because of the physical feel and air tightness. I haven't played any other brands for years so I can't really compare. The GM seems to have some pretty good reeds as I haven't blown any in the two years. Overblowing can strain reeds if done forcefully.
The reedplates are nailed but fairly easy to remove if you tap the nails out backwards first. Out of the twenty GM's I've bought in four years, I only got one with thin, dead reeds. The four I blew reeds on was when I first started overblowing and overdrawing. The hole dividers are a bit wider than the others, easing the task of hitting clean single notes.
