The following is being posted for informational purposes for those who have asked for details on my upcoming seminar.
"The Iceman's" Advanced Diatonic Masterclass Workshop at Augusta Heritage Center
Augusta Heritage Center in W. Virginia, home of the original "Blues Week", is offering an advanced diatonic harmonica workshop during week 4, July 27 - Aug. 1, taught by Larry "The Iceman" Eisenberg. This is the most complete and intensive course in diatonic harmonica offered in the country - 6 hr/day for 5 days.
The class description is as follows - "This class is about improving your performance ability on the diatonic harmonica with creative ideas and new techniques. We will explore imaginative ways to approach traditional blues, expanding musical vocabulary through a study of traditional and modern blues and jazz styles. Class time will be spent on improving technique and listening skills, understanding proper "feel", and how to lift ideas from recordings. Musical examples and videos will include the traditional harmonica masters along with Paul deLay, Mark Hummell, Jerry Portnoy, Corky Siegel, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Carlos delJunco, Michel Herblin, and Howard Levy. We will also examine the blues music of Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Stanley Turrentine, and Maceo Parker, demonstrating how their styles and ideas can be applied to the harmonica.
You will be encouraged to play, with much opportunity for in class jamming. The focus will be on improving individual skill levels. Techniques covered will include bending notes to correct pitch, controlled vibrato and tremolo, improving tone, proper tongue-blocking, understanding the overblow concept, performance attitude and relaxation, acoustic and amplified playing, and linear concepts in soloing.
For this class to be most effective, you must have at least an intermediate skill level on the diatonic harmonica. Be able to draw and blow bend, have a working knowledge of at least three dirrerent positions (cross harp, third position, straight or first position), and understand and clearly follow a basic 12 bar blues progression.
Please bring harmonicas in all 12 keys and a tape recorder. Also bring your electric rig, as we will spend time on amplified sound.
If you have any questions, call Larry Eisenberg at (313) 730-4336, or contact the Augusta Heritage Center at (304) 637-1209."
