Harp-l's Jim Rossen suggested a fix for the rack after he examined my problems with it, and I'm part way there. Following Jim's direction if not his suggestion exactly, I've now moved the part that holds the harmonica and screws into the swiss cheese triangle pieces of metal to the top hole of the swiss cheese. Itilt the triangle away from meand angle the harp back toward me and the angle is correct and I do not have the sharp part pressing in my chest. However, I'll need to fabricate (and you can bet I'm a pro at this) a piece of metal that will attach to the swiss cheese and to the head piece to make the angle solid.
I'm therefore concluding that part of the problem all along has been that the part that goes around the neck to the joints that pivot the triangle pieces of metal is too short for some people and that that length should also have been made adjustable (which shouldn't be hard at all. By tilting the triangle pieces straight out and making the top hole the fulcrum of the swivel, I'm in essence extending the neck piece another two inches or so. Then the swivel pieces end up adjusting the height a bit and the angle, but the real angle part is pushed out a couple of inches. If I can make this configuration work, I'll say that this badly designed piece is still better than the generic ones, the Hohners, the Lee Oskars, and that it's badly designed. If I can't get this configuration to work I'll probably still use it as it is better than the above mentioned despite all these flaws.
Bloody frustrating, but like Harmonica John, I can't afford to screw around with it not working at all, and at an almost angle, its weight and stability are still of value. Too bad this is turning to my fall term project in Shop. It should have been somebody else's.
