I know that this isn't what you want to hear, Rod, but if your
main concern is to get a decent recording of your practices, and not to
make a demo tape or CD or whatever, you might just do better sticking a
handheld cheap radio shack cassette tape recorder between you, instead of
trying for stereo dolby. In theory there oughta be a way to use your
stereo system to record you, and if it's a good system, that makes the
desire stronger, but unless you're willing to shell out more bucks on a
mixer or whatever (yes, radio shack has some cheap ones of those, too),
you might as well just make working tapes. If you do want to try to make
a demo or something where you'll be wanting to showcase your talent, I'll
let the experts talk you through that. I know you want to sound your
best, but once you start sinking money into wanting to get a really good
recording, you'll frustrate yourself with your present equipment. My
advice is, honestly, is to just accept that you won't get a good
recording and just go for a useful one.
