Subject: "hot" pin for XLR may vary - am I using the wrong cable?

Pete Brunelli quoted a faq about pro-audio, that said sometimes,
on xlr connectors, pin 1 is "hot", sometimes it's the pin 2, and sometimes
it's the pin 3.

Supposing that the XLR connector is that one i find in my BluesBlaster
mic, and supposing, by the FAQ quoted, that the "purpose" of each pin of
a XLR connector may vary, my question is: Could I be using the wrong cable
to connect my mic to my amp?

I own this BluesBlaster mic, bought Jan/96, the first cable I saw
for sale (that had that 3 pin plug on one side, and that "guitar cable plug"
on the other), and a Bassman Reissue.
