Well, I had my "fifteen minutes" this weekend, playing at the DC Blues Festival and instructing at the harmonica workshop. I played with the DC Blues Society Band. We had a small but appreciative crowd (we started pretty much when the gates were opening). It wasn't the best I've played, but certainly the biggest venue and one of the most memorable I've played. Bob Gray, the DC Blues Society President, told me that from where he was sitting the harp sounded great (of course, he might have meant that he was sitting in his car listening to a Little Walter tape). :-)
Little Bit of Blues was on after us, and my friend Jay Summerour played some nice acoustic harp to accompany Warner Williams' guitar and vocals. Little Sammy Davis was on after Warner and Jay and he also played a very nice set (although he didn't play my "Shorty," my favorite song on his album). Sammy is a fantastic player and singer who mixes a lot of soul and jazz with his blues playing. See him if you get a chance.
The workshop went really well. I brought my little Silvertone amp to play through and Jay played through the PA. This was we were able to demonstrate acoustic and electric harp playing. We jammed on a few tunes and I discussed some of the techniques we were using and gave some pointers on various things, like rhythm playing and tone.
There were a lot of har players at the workshop and we got a few of them up to play a little. Harp-lers Bill Grogan and Charlie Williams were among the jammers, and they both sounded great. We finished the workshop by doing a few songs with Warner Williams.
There is another free blues festival this coming weekend in the DC area - the Bluebird Blues Festival, this Sunday (sept. 15) at PG Community College. Satan and Adam are among the featured acts, and I'm looking forward to finally hearing them live and meeting Adam.
