I think I've mentioned this on-list before but the trick is to hydrate
internally rather than externally with a beverage. My standard meal before
gigs consists mostly of fruits and/or vegetables. I've done quite a bit of
experimentation and although I love onion, garlic and peppers, and they
hydrate well, these vegies tend to gas me up a little and impact my vocals.
My favorites before a gig are pears, mangos, peaches, grapes, plums,
apples, nectarines, etc.
