This weekend I finished reading Larry Adler's autobiography "It Ain't Necessarily So." Although I play nothing like Adler (and probably never will), I'm a big fan of his simply for what he has done for the harmonica and for his incredible musicianship.
The book is very interesting and entertaining. Adler is a very funny writer. I have heard that he is very arrogant but I really didn't get that from his book. He did say that most blues, rock, folk, etc. players don't play the instrument correctly and can't play all of the missing notes. The book was published in 1982 - I wonder what Adler thinks about Howard Levy and all of the overblowing players. He does say that Sonny Terry is a great player and he could never even try to get the sound that Terry got. He also mentions Big Bill Broonzy as being a great blues player. I don't know too much about Broonzy, but I always knew him as a guitarist. He must have gotten the wrong name here (maybe he meant Big Walter?).
Overall, it is a great and very inspiring book that all harp players should check out.
