Gear attracts certain fascination with any 'defining' activity. And it's
clear to me that there are any number of talented 'naked' artists, as
well as gear-laden also rans. The dividing line for me has to do with the
relationship between product and process. Those whose fascination and,
dare I suggest obsession, with 'product' tend to be those who want to
mimic a sound or 'find' a particular sound so that they can 'own' that
particular sound. It's an endgame approach that never quite reaches its end.
Those whose evolving sense of art and artfulness involves exploration of
sounds, techniques, and entire garages worth of gear tend to be working a
different path.
Anecdotes abound. That's not my point.
If you want to know how Piazza gets 'that' sound, that's one path.
If you wanna sound like Piazza, that's another.
And for the latter, may I suggest just turning up your stereo
and removing the reed plates from your harps.
