Subject: Re: valved diatonic

Tweezers aren't essential for attaching valves, but they help a lot - greasy
finger marks can make the valve misbehave in all manner of ways! Also, avoid
attaching any valves that are not completely flat. If you can be bothered,
any twisted or warped valves can be placed between two sheets of paper and
smoothed with a warm (ie not too hot) iron.

I used to valve the top four blow reeds of my diatonics - gave some me draw
bends in the upper octave, as well as a lovely vibrato. Howevr, the big
appeal of the 10-hole for me, was always its simplicity. To me, valves were
just another thing to go wrong,as well as preventing me from getting
overdraws. As my overdraw technique improved, I abandoned the valves,
although there are times when I miss them. There are some playerrs who make
great used of the valved diatonic (Brendan Power springs quickly to mind)
and I would recommend to everyone, that they at least try it for a while, if
only to improve their technique as Mike suugests.

Also, anyone wanting to enter the British Harmonica Championships has only a
couple of weeks left in which to apply. Both myself and fellow harp-l'er
Douglas Tate will be amongst the adjudicators, so those of you who have
argued with us once too often, will stand no chance of winning! Just a joke
- - actually this year steps have been taken to ensure impartiality. If you're
interested, contact David (midnig~acline.co.uk) for more details, before
July 31st.
