I just moved from Chicago, and I know of an excellent teacher you might contact. His name is Ron Sorin. (You can here his fine playing on two CD's by his band "Big Shoulders" on Rounder Records.) I don't have his home number here, but you can contact him through either of the music stores where he teaches. One is called "Flatts and Sharpe" and is located on North Sheridan Road in Chicago. The other is "Sound Post" which is either in Evanston or Skokie (both very close suburbs to the north.)
There's also a guy called John Bruno. He normally advertises in the Reader (a free weekly newspaper). I don't know him personally, but some reliable sources recommend him highly.
You should also drop a call in to the "Olde Town School of Folk Music." I don't know who's teaching there at the moment, but in the past they've offered individual instruction and seminars from Sugar Blue and Joe Filisko.
Based on your assessment of your playing, I would definitely start with Ron Sorin. He has a perfectly laid-back personality and no-nonsense playing style that I think you'd enjoy.
