Subject: RE: Review: Carleen's, Wilmington, DE (long)

Harpers,

Chon did a great job giving y'all a low down of our "night
to remember" with Steve Guyger and Guitar Red. He told so MANY
stories of our heroes, that I wished we had recorded it all for
posterity. He made the trip doubly worth the long drive,
one of the last of the old-timers, he's played with just about
all of the well known harpers from the '50's to mid '70's. I
found him to be sort of cross between Brownie McGee and Sonny
Terry, because he played guitar AND whooped it up (for sure)!

And, as Chon mentioned, Steve Guyger is a master of our
little instrument, playing effortlessly, cleanly and nearly
constantly through each set. I felt like I was attending
a LW workshop, as the evening indeed was a real tribute to
the MAN. Steve mentioned to me that his Fender Concert was
only working on 3 of it's 4 10's, but it didn't matter as his
sound was not affected. Surprisingly, his regular guitarist,
Rich Yescalis, played through another Concert (?'62), but his
was brown (quite rare I believe), while Steve's was Black/
Blackface. Now I ask you, when have you ever seen 2 Concerts
on stage together?

Not much else to add to Chon's post, other than to try
and convey how much fun I had too. And to encourage others to
catch Steve at one of his gigs sometime. He's a real gentleman,
and a great frontman to boot. And, he's keeping the blues
alive and well. Thanks for a great time Steve.
