Subject: sitting in

As one who will sit in with anyone without reservation
I'll give my 2 cents. I'm certain that I would not
be playing professionally if I hadn't started out
sitting in with talented bands.

If someone asks to sit in we generally will oblige, but
we first do a verbal screening and review out set list
(or backup song list) for songs that they know. I haven't
let any vocalist I didn't know sit in (based upon seeing
events such as BBB had occur). If a harp player doesn't
have a selection of harps I'll ask them to play a few
licks and chug some rhythm during a break. I have had to
turn down a few players who got upset, but that's bar life.
Sitting in is something I really enjoy doing and is a
big reason that I like the Chicago blues scene - you
can sit in once and if they like you then you can do
it again later.

If you like to sit in and the band is nervous let them
know that you won't be offended if they turn you down and
let them control the volume. If you can play they will
know and turn you up.

If you're strictly a harp player and don't sing you're
more than welcome to come by and play a couple of tunes
at most gigs (it is true some clubs have rules on
sitting in). Unless I know you well I won't let you
control the stage (Oh Susanna?, I'll remember that - OUCH!)

Dirty Ned (hoping you'll let me sit in at your gig)
Hoosier Daddys - gigs shown in Danny's listing
(hoping we'll see you at ours, bring harps)
