For the record, I talked with Howard Levy last Spring when he was recording in a nearby studio; he had recently come off the road from working with Loggins. I cannot speak for Levy on this or any other matter, but my clear impression that night was that he considered the gig to be enjoyable musically, and that he considered the musicianship of the people in Loggins's band, including Loggins himself, to be strong.
I'd have to concur. Howard came to SF with Loggins in late '94, and I was backstage with him during the gig (he had several cameo spots, and the lighting left him at liberty to leave the stage to hobnob and enthuse when he wasn't playing). He was *very* up about the music, and it was clear both then and during our interview several months earlier that he thought very highly indeed of the musicianship of all involved. While he amiably dismissed some of Loggins' material as fluff - - who could call something like "Footloose" much more than that? - he had enormous respect for the way Loggins as a performer drew audiences in and reached them emotionally, and said that he had learned a great deal from Loggins about communicating with an audience.
