Subject: Annie Raines

I went to see Paul Rishell and Annie Raines last Friday night at
Caffe Lena in Saratoga, NY. I tried to post to the list but I mistyped the
address and the bounce got back too late. (Is there anyone else on list
from this area? Write me.)
Excellent show. Paul Rishell was incredible on steel guitar. When
he started some Son House song (Depot Blues?) my jaw just dropped. For
the life of me I couldn't figure out how he was doing it. Later in the
evening halfway though a song the guitar gave up the ghost and detuned
itself to oblivion. Paul made a face and limped though an ending and smiled.
Annie was excellent as well. I prefered her accoustic stuff better
but I think that was mostly due to the small confines of Cafe Lena. She
played one song on chromatic (looked like a Super 64) without the benefit of
a button for the slide. Annie made due with a folded up piece of cloth and
did a very good job at it. My favorite part of the night was when Annie
did "Too Late Brother". Paul used his guitar as percussion and Annie smoked.
This is one of my favorite LW songs.
Annie did a song she wrote with this simple three note riff that I
couldn't get out of my head. Saturday night I went to one of the empty
buildings on campus (Spring Break) and jammed in the men's room. The place
is mostly tile with huge ceilings, amazing sound. I'm playing along and
I stop and realize that I'm playing the same three note riff. I wasn't
even trying but I jammed and extended the riff and it was probably the best
I've played in a very long time. This alone made going to the show well
worth it.
