Hi Joe
saw your comment and about mics and just wanted to express my opinion:
I use the SM-57 pencil syle mic which apparrantly has the same diaphram as the Shure ball mics. I have chosen the "pistol" style popularized by Paul Butterfield. The actual model I use is called the 546 and is still manufactured. I liked my previous model even better. It was called the 545SD. When it broke, (the diaphram just up and died on me) I sent it to Shure Bros. and they replaced it with the 546 as the 545SD was no longer in production. I have sent in several mics to them over the years and they always replace the mic with a brand new one for a flat $75.
I like this model cause it looks kewl and slips easily into the belt or pocket. It has a hi-lo impedence switch. I also find that this mic is extremely responsive and that I can get a wider variety of tonal effects from this mic than any other I have tried. I blow through a relatively "clean" sounding amp ...currently a 120 watt hybrid Peavey Artist. I can get a range of tone from this mic that ranges from Charlie McCoy "country clean" to Little Walter or Butterfield "down and dirty" with tons of raw muscle.
