Subject: harp market size

I'm toying around with a new idea for a harp and before I get serious enough to spend money on it I was wondering if anyone has any marketing data on harmonicas. The major manufacturers
are pretty closed mouth when it comes to sales info so I though some harp-l'ers might be able to help.

I've seen figures (I think in AHN) that there are 2 million US harmonica players. Anyone know if this is accurate? What does this translate to in terms of unit sales? What do these players spend per year on instruments? What about microphone sales volume? How many working pros do you think there are?

Sorry I can't be more specific about my plans - have to worry about patent protection first. BTW, if any of you ever have some spare time and are near a patent depository (the public
libraries in large cities should have them as well as the engineering schools at major universities), go look up some of the patents on harmonicas. Pretty fascinating stuff with some great line art. While I was at it, I found the original patent drawings from Leo Fender's guitars as well as the relevent Gibson stuff to the Les Paul models. Can a white goy sing the Jews?
